Course summary
The MSc by Research in Psychology at the University of Salford offers students the opportunity to conduct independent research under the guidance of an academic supervisor within one of our specialised psychology research groups.
Our research groups focus on advancing the understanding of human behaviour while applying this knowledge to real-world challenges, such as improving mental health, cognition, and performance. With a rigorous approach to studying the mind, brain, and behaviour, our research aims to deliver a positive societal impact.
Supported by extensive facilities, our research is centred around key themes:

About the course
The MSc by Research in Psychology is designed to equip you with essential skills in conducting research, ethical research practices, data collection and analysis, open and reproducible science, and effective communication. With access to comprehensive training, expert supervision, and excellent research facilities, your research training will be tailored to your specific needs and interests. Your supervisory team will work with you to customise your research programme.
You will be fully immersed in our dynamic research community, with the possibility of transferring to a PhD programme towards the end of your study.
Assessment
The MSc by Research in Psychology is awarded based on the successful completion of a thesis that presents original research conducted under the supervision of an academic mentor. The final assessment includes an oral examination (viva voce) attended by two academic examiners (one internal examiner from the University of Salford not involved in your research, and one external examiner from another university), a viva chair, and the student.
What about after uni?
The MSc by Research in Psychology provides excellent preparation for further academic research, such as a PhD. It also equips graduates for postgraduate training towards a career as a professional psychologist (e.g., clinical, forensic, organisational, or educational psychologist) or for roles in the charity, public, and private sectors.
Beyond subject-specific knowledge, this degree imparts valuable transferable skills highly sought after by employers, including data analysis, statistical techniques, written and oral communication, data synthesis, critical analysis, teamwork, project management, and time management.
