Course summary

An MSc (by Research) is the perfect qualification to take your first steps into research. You'll gain qualitative and/or quantitative research skills. These will be essential when you complete independent research projects. If you are aiming to study for a PhD, the MSc (by Research) will prepare you for study at PhD level. You will also gain subject-specific research skills for professional development purposes.
You'll demonstrate an understanding of research methods suitable to your chosen field. You'll undertake an approved programme of supervised research and it gets assessed via a thesis and a viva voce (oral examination).

The Youth and Justice group is focused on issues facing young people involved in offending, and more broadly on issues around children and young peoples inclusion, their participation in decision-making and their experiences in communities. We are a dynamic, multi-disciplinary group pioneering innovative, ethnographic research methods with children and young people. We have excellent academic and policy/practice networks, which we are keen to develop further. We are interested in research which makes a real difference. Johns social work experience has spanned several years of practice, education and management mainly within the City of Liverpool. He teaches social work values, research methods, ethnicity, and social work. His research interests centre around ethnicity, and social work with a particular focus on children, young people and their families.
