COURSE OVERVIEW
The construction world is witnessing a transformation to become a smart and technologically innovative industry. This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to deliver effective innovation and successfully manage projects in this ever-evolving field.
You could already be working as a construction professional and be aiming to enhance your knowledge, or you could be from a technical background, including engineering or architectural technology, and want to build your business acumen and management skills. This course will help you gain the expertise to manage smart construction and innovation, project procurement and the commercial and financial management of construction. It will also enable you to play a key role in shaping the future of a smart and innovative industry.
You will be able to use your experiences in the workplace to enhance your learning and in turn, you will be encouraged to reflect on challenges and problems with your course peers, and learn how theory can help you to improve your practice.
This course offers a range of option modules allowing you to study a broad spectrum of construction management topics in areas such as project management, construction law and dispute resolution and smart construction. It also provides the opportunity to focus on one of these areas as part of the degree.
This course combines academic expertise with its professional application. We are committed to providing you with opportunities to network with industry specialists and practitioners through our series of guest lectures and activities involving construction experts. The lecturers who will lead your studies are respected professionals, many of whom continue to practise. Staff on the course team include Dr Saheed Ajayi, a chartered construction manager with research expertise in the use of digital technologies in Construction, Martin Green, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and John Heathcote, an experienced project manager practitioner and chair of the Value Management Special Interest Group for the Association for Project Management.
The School of Built Environment & Engineering is home to the Centre for Knowledge Exchange (CKE), an enterprise hub that connects our university with the regional built environment sector through seminars, workshops and networking events.
The CKE also runs two business networks, which support and enhance the activity of the school and help us to ensure the course meets the rigorous standards expected in industry: Constructing Excellence Yorkshire & Humber and ThinkBIM.
In addition, our university is playing a key role in accelerating innovations in the industry through cutting-edge research into smart construction. We are home to the Leeds Sustainability Institute, which aims to tackle the challenge of creating more sustainable places, communities and economies to enable society and its infrastructure to become sustainable.
