Course Overview
Apply your engineering skills to a master’s degree that focuses on design. Use your knowledge and creativity to come up with new products and services. If you have a background in engineering and you're looking to apply your skills more creatively, our master's programme is a great start for you.
Our course brings together both the practical and creative aspects of designing new products and services. You'll learn about how creative techniques, analytical skills and engineering principles are used to solve design challenges. Learning continues beyond the classroom, you'll explore how design impacts all sectors of industry and how it overlaps with engineering.

This course has been developed in partnership with the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED). You’ll learn from academics with professional, teaching and research eir industrial collaborations and research in product design and related fields will feed into your teaching and learning experience.
Use specialist facilities
You’ll have access to the Engineering IT studio, where current industry standard software such as Solidworks is available. Facilities also support a range of other activities including advanced 3D printing, design and CAD/CAM labs.
By the time you complete the course, you will have the technical and transferable skills highly sought after by industry or academic research.
Course Details
The course is structured around the themes of Design/Technology, Project Management, Business Alignment and Complex Problem Solving in an engineering context.
This programme will help
- enhance your knowledge and skills in specialist and contemporary areas of design and technology to deal with complex engineering problems
- provide an understanding of commercial/financial management and contemporary tools and processes required for competitive product design and manufacture.
- develop your project management skills, including the management of people and resources
- prepare you for a research degree
In addition, you'll gain the enterprise skills necessary to launch brand new products to market.
Delivered through lectures and tutorials, each of the modules you study will focus on empowering you to think critically and learn how to analyse and evaluate solutions to complex, real-life problems.

You will be able to progress to a range of opportunities and careers within the Engineering sector. You will be able to work in senior positions such as product design and development engineer, production engineer, manufacturing engineer in the electrical and mechanical engineering companies.
