Course summary

If you're ready to launch or accelerate your career in development and humanitarian management, this rewarding course is your gateway to making a real impact. You’ll gain the practical skills and critical insight needed to navigate the complex challenges facing today’s global development sector.

Designed for aspiring professionals and changemakers, this programme empowers you to think strategically, act ethically, and lead with confidence. Practical issues are at the heart of this one-year full-time course. You’ll develop a rigorous critique of the ways NGOs and other agencies operate, along with a deep understanding of the political contexts of development. You'll also develop a strong conceptual understanding of key debates and issues in global development and gain technical skills in project design and project management.

This dynamic course is housed in the School of Global Development, a world-leading centre for research, teaching, and practice, ranked as the No. 1 Development Studies institution in the UK (REF 2021). The course focuses on addressing contemporary challenges in developing and transitioning economies through both disciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches. You'll consistently benefit from our research-led teaching, ensuring you're exposed to the latest thinking in the field.

Throughout the programme, you’ll be supported in developing your specialist areas of interest, with the flexibility to choose from a wide range of modules across disciplines such as economics, agricultural policy, media, environmental justice, climate change, gender, and education.

A Development Work Placement is a highly recommended alternative to a traditional dissertation. This opportunity allows you to work with a relevant organisation and produce an extended analytical report based on your experience. The placement enables you to apply and reflect on the theories and concepts covered throughout your studies, while gaining valuable insights into real-world humanitarian issues, the results agenda, project management systems, and other key areas within your chosen organisation.
