Course summary
If you are a qualified nurse seeking dual registration as a midwife and you have a minimum of one year’s practice in adult nursing, then this Masters degree is for you. Building on your existing skills in adult nursing, you will gain a comprehensive education in midwifery, develop into a confident, effective and compassionate midwife, and achieve a professional qualification which incorporates the leadership and management skills that enables registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The programme focuses on normality in maternal and neonatal care as well as the provision of care for women with complex care needs. It is designed to support the transition to the field of midwifery and postgraduate study. You will become an autonomous, evidence-based and research-aware practitioner, able to deliver excellent care and respond to the challenges of the midwifery profession.
What will I study?
The programme is designed to underpin the application of a broad range of health care related skills, acquired from previous nursing education, to the standards specific to midwifery.
You will build your skills, knowledge and confidence in supporting women and their families through the childbirth continuum, first exploring normal reproductive physiology during pregnancy and childbirth and then examining potential complications, including clinical skills provision for women with complex care needs.
Exploring research and evidence-based practice in maternal and neonatal health will introduce you to relevant research methodologies, while a focus on leadership and change in health and social care will equip you with the skills required to be a practice innovator. You will also explore maternity care in the broader context of the contemporary public health agenda.
Career Prospects
As a registered midwife there is a wide choice of career destinations, from hospital-based roles within the NHS or private health care, to providing services in women’s homes or working in the community, local clinics, birth centres, children’s centres and GP surgeries.
Many of our Midwifery graduates work on antenatal, labour and post labour wards, and neonatal units. Alternatively, you may wish to pursue opportunities in education, counselling, research, specialist practitioner roles and management.
