Course summary

Course Overview

Our MSc in Organisational Resilience is ideal for those who have experience in any or all areas of resilience and are looking to get ahead in their career. Throughout the course, you will be able to enhance your skills and knowledge across risk, security, business continuity and crisis management, supported by our highly experience academic team.

On completion, you will be able to apply academic rigour to your professional capability and development, helping you to gain a competitive edge. This course continues to be popular as we are the only higher education institution to offer this in the UK.

What will I study?

Organisations are vulnerable and exposed to threats from malicious or accidental events on a constant basis. In order to be able to manage the impacts of any risks upon an organisation and its assets, there are multiple levels of planning which should be considered.

Throughout the programme, you will apply current theories, concepts and practices to organisational resilience. We focus on learning that is anchored in reality, rather than the sterility of pure theory. We explore real problems and identify innovative solutions that can be applied effectively in a competitive and dynamic work environment.

Areas of study that are covered in the course include:

  • threat risk and impact perspectives
  • security management
  • business continuity management and perspectives
  • civil protection, crisis and emergency management

How will I be taught and assessed?

We've designed this course to make our expertise accessible even to those who are unable to attend on-site. Our students are globally dispersed, sometimes with limited access to the internet, so we adapt the course to suit each individual.

The programme begins with an induction day, followed by a four-week pre-study phase aimed at building the critical writing and evaluation skills needed to complete the course. We then move into the course modules, with each one taught in two phases:

  • The first half starts with a two-day, face-to-face workshop (which is also live-streamed and recorded for our overseas students) where an initial assignment is released for students to complete.
  • The second half of the module then goes into more advanced, in-depth aspects of the curriculum. This is explored again through a two-day, face-to-face workshop (live streamed and recorded) after which a second assignment is issued for students to complete.

The workshops are made up of lectures, seminars and small group work – where relevant, we may have visits from industry professionals to enhance students’ learning further. Outside of the workshops, students are expected to undertake self-directed study which is essential for distance learning elements of this programme.

What are my career prospects?

On successful completion of this award, students from all backgrounds will find their employment prospects enhanced and their understanding of the multiple facets of organisational resilience significantly deepened.

Managers will have gained the requisite knowledge and analytical skills to enable them to perform at higher management levels within their organisations; recent graduates or people employed outside the resilience sector are more likely to be able to obtain employment in relevant industries; and current employees will be better equipped to seek promotion.

All graduates will have also developed transferable skills that can be used in a wide range of employment roles.
