Course summary
Whether you are looking to make a start in the planning and property field or you already work in the profession, this course will provide the core planning education and specialism expertise you need to make your mark in these growing industries. The MSc Planning and Urban Leadership is designed for those who wish to lead change in the built and natural environment.Because the course is delivered entirely through distance learning, you'll be able to fit your studies around other commitments. There's no obligation to live locally as your learning and assessment will take place online. Learning materials and opportunities for peer interaction are provided weekly, but you have flexibility as to when you interact.
You'll be taught by widely-published academics, who'll bring the benefit of their own industry experience as well as feeding the latest research directly into your learning. This course will support the development of skills and knowledge concerning planning and property practice, including plan and policy creation, planning implementation, decision making, development finance, design, governance, and community engagement.
You will also focus upon planning for major projects and managing strategic change, with the potential option of also studying a specialist module on leadership and influencing change accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). Real-world practice scenarios will give you hands-on experience of the kind of situations you'll face in practice through applied studies and assessments. The course also embeds professional skills including report writing, argumentation, effective communication, negotiation, and technical skills. Your new skills and knowledge will make you a perfect match for careers in the planning and property professions, whether in the public, private or third sector. You may also find opportunities in related areas such as housing, development, conservation, environmental management and governance.
