Course summary

The combination of modules I studied as part of the MSc Psychology conversion has given me a strong foundation of psychology as a subject, while strengthening my knowledge and application of how to use research methods. As a result of completing the MSc, I am aware of the benefits that psychological theories can have in changing society and how to use the knowledge I've gained to create new career opportunities.

Psychology is all around us. It is a diverse and fascinating subject which offers a scientific insight into human behaviour and the mind. Whether you are aiming to pursue a career as a psychologist or seeking to understand more about the mind and its influence on our behaviour and interactions, our BPS accredited MSc Psychology programme offers you a flexible approach to reaching that next step and achieving your goal. The programme is a psychology conversion course that provides students with non-psychology backgrounds broad grounding in psychological theory and research, and will equip you with the academic and practical skills sought by a wide range of employers.

On successful completion of the programme you will be eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society (BPS). Therefore, this programme provides you with a stepping-stone into a future career in psychology either through further postgraduate training (e.g., to become a Clinical, Educational, Forensic Psychologist) or postgraduate research (e.g. PhD).

Throughout the programme we provide a high-level of academic support and content that will facilitate a stimulating and engaging learning experience. The course is designed with vocational/professional training in mind, and many of our team have practitioner backgrounds as well as being academics, bringing a wide-range of expertise and an applied approach to teaching. You will have the opportunity of working closely with a member of staff during your independent research project. Your training in research methods and statistics will also offer you the opportunity to engage in sophisticated, postgraduate level research and provides opportunities to take part in a wide-range of research projects online. We also offer you dedicated career and employability sessions to help you in your journey towards your chosen career path.

  • This course will give you a Master’s level qualification that confers eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS).
  • You will benefit from hands on, enquiry-based learning.
  • You will be involved in research currently being conducted by the Psychology Team at this university via your research project supervisor.
  • You will be assigned a personal academic tutor who will also double as your mentor throughout the programme. This person will be your first port of call and will be available throughout the programme for support.

How you’ll be assessed

Our assessment strategy uses a number of formats designed to tap into the different skills you are expected to develop during your time with us, and may include objective assessments, essays, portfolios, practical reports, presentations, podcasts, and a final research project.

Your future career

Graduates from our programme have gone onto postgraduate training in psychology, for example, training in Clinical and Forensic Psychology, in addition to obtaining roles as assistant psychologists, psychological wellbeing practitioners, support workers, and intervention facilitators.
