Course summary

Our MSc Supply Chain Management, based in Malawi, is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to contribute significantly to the operation and improvement of contemporary supply chains. Accredited by two professional bodies - CIPS and CILT - it’s your opportunity to learn to analyse, understand and respond to the demands of a range of supply-chain environments in an efficient and effective manner.

This course is only available to International (Non EU) students.

Course Details

This dual professionally accredited programme runs at the Malawi Institute of Management (MIM) in Lilongwe and is a popular academic programme that includes weekend workshops with University of Bolton and local tutor support. Course materials aim to reflect current trends and issues in Malawian and African supply chain management (SCM), and place emphasis on applying best industrial practice in appropriate ways.

Starting at a strategic level, you’ll explore how supply chains can leverage the competitiveness of the organisation by the appropriate configuration of the supply network, the distribution channels, location of facilities, transportation and inventory management, outsourcing and choice of information systems. This supports you to formulate supply chain strategies and demonstrate the communications, leadership and management qualities required for implementation. At an operational level, you’ll have the opportunity to learn how to choose suppliers, negotiate contracts, schedule deliveries, measure and improve supply chain performance, determine delivery quantities and timings, set up and manage warehouses and distribution centres, set up transportation contracts with logistics providers, and employ risk assessment strategies in situations of uncertainty.

By studying this course, you’ll have the opportunity to develop a knowledgeable and professional approach to supply chain management and development – and to specialise in procurement, information systems, physical logistics, operations management and aftermarket support within supply chains – something potential employers could value highly.

Career Opportunities

The MSc in Supply Chain Management is designed for the further development of those who want to work in supply chain management in manufacturing and service organisations. Graduates will be able to evaluate and manage technologies and use planning systems in order to improve the operational functions of a business. A small business may have one person in charge of these duties, while large corporations have entire supply chain departments.

Some of the more common job roles in this discipline include analyst, inventory control manager, logistics engineer, production manager, purchasing manager, supply chain manager, systems support manager, customer service manager, global logistics manager and operations director.

A supply chain manager will need to be familiar with various software programs, as that is the most common way to keep track of product movement. This course offers practical, hands-on experience of such software.
