Course summary

The world increasingly needs well-trained professionals who understand complex water and environmental systems to provide effective engineering and nature-based solutions to the effects of flooding, drought and pollution. If you want to pursue a career tackling water and environmental challenges, both locally and globally, this MSc will equip you with the fundamental technical and management skills to do so. We teach both academic and practical skills, so that you discover how you can contribute to the sustainable management of water resources and the protection of the environment. The choice of optional units means that you can choose the right balance of quantitative and qualitative skills, from environmental data science to sustainable systems. Our teaching staff include leading water researchers at the University of Bristol with close links to the Cabot Institute for the Environment and environmental practitioners with experience in private and government sectors, such as the Environment Agency and the Met Office. Our research includes expertise in the areas of hydrology (rainfall radar, flood prediction, snowmelt, water resources, groundwater and hydrometeorology), water and sanitation, and environmental health. The prestigious Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) from Shanghai Ranking recently placed Bristol 2nd in the UK for the outstanding quality and depth of our research into water resources (2025).
