Course summary
Psychologists conduct experiments to study our perceptions, decisions, prejudices, motivations, friendships and memory. But how do the brain and the body affect these processes? Where in the brain do they occur? And how are they represented? Psychologists and cognitive neuroscientists aim to map how brain and behaviour are related. This contemporary area of psychology investigates areas ranging from vision, hearing and touch to the mechanisms underlying language, action, attention, emotion and social processes. Our Department of Psychology allows you to discover the neurophysiological processes that take place in our bodies and brains. With our Integrated Masters you’ll cover the full range of topics in psychology, including advanced, in-depth coverage of cognitive neuroscience and the scientific study of biological substrates underlying cognition, with a focus on the neural substrates of mental processes. It is a branch of both psychology and neuroscience, overlapping with disciplines such as biological psychology, cognitive psychology and neuropsychology. It also introduces cognitive neuropsychology: the uses of data from single cases of individuals with brain injury or neurological illness to refine theoretical models of cognitive processing. We provide one of the most immersive and exciting experience of studying the human mind in the UK. You’ll learn from our researchers, and work together in the same space via our Research Experience Scheme (RES) which gives you the opportunity to work one-on-one with a psychologist as their research assistant. You’ll have the freedom and facilities to study and experiment, explore and research the human mind.Topics you’ll explore include:- Brain and behaviour- Methods in cognitive neuroscience- Applied and developmental psychology- Language, memory and perception- The theoretical and biological foundations of cognitive scienceOur research is challenging and ground-breaking, rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (REF 2014). We are supported by some of the most prestigious funding bodies, including the ESRC, European Commission and the Leverhulme Trust.
