Course summary
From the bench to the bedside — help to transfer neuroscience and pharmacological discoveries into clinical use. Study topics from the principles of drug design and development to the clinical aspects of the management of major neurological diseases. The clinical component is unique to this course and ties together the scientific, clinical and personal aspects of neurological disease.
- Gain a thorough grounding in the principles underlying translational medicine
- Focus on diseases of the nervous system and the challenges associated with developing better therapies
- Explore laboratory methods and models used in drug discovery and the specific methodology of clinical trials
- Learn the steps involved in the development and implementation of new treatments and how to apply this knowledge in a future professional role
- Undertake your own research in writing your dissertation
Facilities
At Queen Mary you will have access to a number of advanced facilities, some of which are designated exclusively to postgraduate students. These include:
- the Blizard Building, which has state of-the-art facilities for students and staff including open-plan research laboratories, office space, a 400-seater lecture theatre and a café, and several seminar rooms
- a Learning Resources Centre, open around the clock, with 200 networked PCs solely for the use of postgraduate students
- medical libraries located at the Royal London and St Bart's hospitals and at the Queen Mary Mile End campus
- access to the Postgraduate Reading Room
- research access to the British Library.
Career paths
Alumni of this MSc programme have gone on to take up roles as clinical trial coordinators, or have taken on graduate roles in healthcare companies.
Some have become medical and science writers, begun marketing and communications roles or become research scientists in the academic or industry sector.
Some students have returned to their clinical work/study and others are pursuing a career as independent scientific investigators. Graduates have also enrolled in PhD studies or gone on to medical school.
