Course summary


As a mental health nurse you will play a crucial role in supporting people who are experiencing or recovering from a range of mental health problems. Each day brings new challenges and experiences.

Our course will help you to develop the skills you need to make a difference to the lives of people in mental distress and offer eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).As part of your studies, you'll undertake practice placements and apply your learning in a variety of settings including hospitals, care homes and in the community. Each of the modules has a theme such as the recognition, assessment, care planning and interventions for mental illnesses.

Professional accreditation

This Mental Health Nursing course is subject to a conjoint approval between the University and the Nursing and Midwifery Council. All regulated courses, once approved, are subject to ongoing monitoring processes and periodic approval by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). To be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council you must demonstrate good health and good character throughout your studies and on completion of the course. Applications for professional registration will be subject to satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and Occupational Health clearance. You will be assessed annually in practice against the Nursing and Midwifery Council proficiencies and must pass this assessment.


Specialist facilities

As a healthcare student, you will have access to our specialist, industry-relevant, simulation facilities at Canterbury and Medway campuses. These simulation suites allow you to practise hands-on skills in a fully-equipped, realistic hospital environment. This course is runs at our Canterbury and Medway Campuses in Kent.

A short walk away is Augustine House our award-winning library and home to a vast range of learning resources and student support teams.MedwayOur Medway Campus is located near to The Historic Dockyard Chatham in Kent. Rochester is also close by with its beautiful cathedral and buzzing high street. The campus has a unique atmosphere, with its long-standing reputation for excellence in Health and Social Care, Education and the Early Years. Nearby is a student-friendly quarter with a multiplex cinema, a shopping centre and a fully equipped sports centre. The campus is part of Universities at Medway, which is made up of three universities: CCCU, the University of Kent and the University of Greenwich, so you’ll be part of a vibrant student campus with plenty of facilities.
