This course is aimed at the busy dental practitioner who wants to combine home study with treating patients under the direct clinical supervision of experienced consultants and specialists.
This two-year programme, with much of the academic delivery online has evolved from our successful three-year MSc Oral Surgery programme and has been re-designed in response to student feedback.
The course comprises of four days of supervised clinical training, with academic teaching via an online delivery model so you can study flexibly from home.
This course provides authentic clinical training and education, delivered both online and face-to-face that’s aimed at preparing you to provide safe and appropriate oral surgery treatment as part of your clinical practice.
Why study with us
- You’ll study at a University that is well known as a provider of high-quality clinical training and education with state-of-the-art teaching facilities.
- Course highlights include learnings of microbiology of oral infections, dental radiology, treatment planning, medical complications plus communication skills combined with patient psychology.
- The course benefits from small group sizes, usually 12 or less, meaning there’s an informal and supportive learning environment.
Learning and assessment
You’ll start with plenary lectures and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility, working on a pig’s head and similar systems. You’ll then progress to treating live patients, under close supervision in our Dental Clinic, and be assessed by Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS).
You and your group will prepare and lead the academic aspect of the course with presentations, directed reading and case-based discussions.
Assessments focus on your higher level skills of diagnosis and planning, rather than simply remembering facts. Typical assessments include analysis of given clinical cases, case presentations, practical tests, written examinations and critical essays.
