Course summary

Research overview

Masters by Research (MRes) programmes allow students to undertake a substantial amount of independent research while gaining 20 credits of transferable skills training. The programmes are flexible in nature and allow students to take some additional accredited taught credits, in consultation with their supervisor.

We work on understanding the biology of the major parasites of both humans and animals. Of particular interest is gaining an understanding of immunity and the contribution of genetics to host susceptibility and parasite immune evasion strategies. These core interests underpin the search for novel immunotherapies for the major tropical diseases including gastrointestinal nematodes, filariasis, malaria, trypanosomiasis and schistosomiasis.

Research facilities

The School of Life Sciences is at the cutting-edge of many research areas and has modern facilities.

We have excellent facilities for genomics and post genomics including micro-arrays, sequencing, proteomics, imaging, mouse and zebrafish transgenics, model organisms (bacteria, yeast, worms, flies, arachnids, fish, amphibians, crustaceans and mammals) and bioinformatics.

We also foster interactions and discussions of current research with several internal themed discussion groups which include postgraduates, postdoctoral fellows and academic staff. We provide an environment for pursuing research in a fruitful and productive fashion leading to further development as scientists.
