Course summary

Course overview

This programme is delivered as fully online distance learning provision. It is a part-time programme which can be taken flexibly, on its own, or alongside part-time employment. It allows you to attain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education without the QTS element. This award is recognised in a wide range of educational settings. The two modules on this programme will enable you to critically analyse learning and teaching. In doing so you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key theories of learning and teaching, and to reflect on their application in your chosen setting.

The modules are delivered in a highly interactive and engaging manner, through the VLE Blackboard site. This will enable you to become part of a wider learning community. Learning will be supported by a wide range of social media tools.

The course offers incredible flexibility and is suitable for a wide audience:

  • If you are currently working or have access to an educational setting
  • If you are intending to seek employment in an education setting this programme would allow you to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (non QTS).
  • If you are undertaking, or have completed, one of the many alternative routes into teaching such as the QTS Direct Assessment Only route this course would be suitable. If you are intending to register for a SCITT in order to obtain QTS, this programme would complement that work.
  • If you are currently living abroad this programme is accessible and would support professional development for a career in education in British schools abroad or in a range of educational settings such as prison service, library service, etc.
  • You may be a qualified teaching assistant planning to progress your career by obtaining this PGCE (Non QTS) whilst also working.

Graduate destinations

This programme has an educational focus and invites you to reflect deeply about what learning is, how learners learn, what enables or hinders them from learning and how best to approach teaching so as to bring about effective learning. As such, it targets careers related to education, for example schools, libraries, the prison service, or any career in the private sector which requires you to work in a training capacity.
