Course summary

Course overview

Would you love to ignite the enthusiasm and inspire young children from the minute they step foot into the nursery or classroom and embark on their educational life? You can as a Key Stage 1 teacher you will teach children aged 3-7.

We’ve designed our highly-rated PGCE Lower Primary with QTS to support your journey all the way from being a student through to achieving status as a newly-qualified teacher.

You will learn all the knowledge required to teach of PGCE General Primary but with a specialist pathway in lower primary, so that you can hone your pedagogy in this area to become an expert member of staff in school, skilled at developing effective teaching and learning in this age group.

You’ll learn through theory and plenty of first-hand experience how to work within the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage framework and confidently devise and deliver interesting lessons to engage young minds across a broad spectrum of subjects in primary school.

And, because our course has QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) built-in, you can apply for a position as a primary school teacher the minute you graduate.

Course summary

You will study a range of modules to develop your knowledge and understanding of 3-7 year olds, including two modules at masters level. These will cover child development, the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1. On completion of the course, you can seek accreditation (of 60 credits) towards our MA in Education Professional Practice.

Over half of the course is spent on school-based learning, with support for each student according to their needs. This will help you reflect and analyse children as learners, cross-curricular learning and teaching, and innovative teaching approaches. The academic part of the course allows you to study curriculum, pedagogy and aspects of professional life (including leadership) beyond the statutory requirements.
