Course summary

Why study Primary?

St Mary's University, Twickenham has been recognised as one of the highest quality providers of training for primary teachers in the country and their Initial Education courses have been judged by Ofsted to be ‘outstanding’. St Mary’s have franchised this successful programme to enable students to study at Wrexham Glynd?r University in North East Wales.

Wrexham Glynd?r University has a long history of Initial Teacher Training and has close connections to many leading primary schools in the Wrexham area on the border between Wales and England. A significant amount of the programmes will be in school where you progress from teaching small groups to whole classes. Your school experience will be with Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Placements are organised by our Placement Learning Unit to ensure that you receive the appropriate level of support.

You will be supported by a passionate and caring team of experienced tutors who strive for excellence in the theory and practice of teaching. By studying with us fantastic resources and support systems will be available to you throughout your PGCE.

  • Primary Initial Teacher Education courses are judged by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’ - the highest grade attainable in an Ofsted inspection.
  • Lectures by experienced, expert practitioners.
  • Enrichment opportunities available e.g. certification of SAK4A (Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All).
  • The opportunity to undertake and Enhanced Placement , allowing you to spend time in a particular educational setting of your choice and follow your particular interests.

We aim to teach and learn alongside creative, reflective and dynamic practitioners who are committed to teaching children. The programme encourages you to increase your understanding of teaching and learning processes in order to develop and maintain the high levels of enthusiasm, ability and passion necessary within the teaching profession.

Teaching takes place in interactive sessions. Tutors model good practice in the use of ICT and use lectures, seminars, and group activities to stimulate and encourage you to become reflective practitioners. Assessments are used to ensure you understand and can apply the knowledge gained while on the course - both in schools and on campus. This is done through a range of methods:

  • Self-assessment
  • Audit of subject knowledge for maths, English and science
  • Presentations
  • Micro-teaching
  • Posters
  • Essays
  • Practical sessions

Assessment is ongoing and tracked against the Teachers Standards. High standards of attendance, punctuality and participation are requirements of all course elements. Assessment is ongoing while on school placements.

Graduates are very successful in securing teaching appointments at the end of their studies. Many take up employment in one of our partnership schools and go on to inspire and mentor students.
