Course summary

Course Details

Translate your passion for English texts, language and drama into a rewarding career as a teacher. We will help you develop your understanding of the nuts and bolts of practical teaching alongside a wide range of theoretical techniques, giving you the skills to manage a variety of teaching scenarios. For example, you could fuel your pupils' interest in the English language and great literary works by using drama to bring short stories, poems and books to life. You will become a storyteller in your lessons, developing pupils' understanding of fiction and its importance to western culture. Learning how to expertly read and express texts using intonation will be a key part of your developing skill set and will play an important role in sparking your pupils' interest. You will also learn how to select different texts to match the different abilities and level of understanding of your class.

Course Benefits

A critically reflective approach to your teaching will be encouraged, helping you to develop your confidence and your own identity and teaching style. To prepare you for your course, you will have the opportunity to attend a residential, where you will meet your tutors and fellow trainees, start to build your networks of support and discover how the outdoors can be used to deliver subjects and inspire your teaching. The bulk of your training will take place in a school environment. Many of the schools involved in the delivery of your course are located in and around Leeds to ensure your travelling is limited and you can maximise your time preparing lessons. You will complete three teaching placements in at least two contrasting schools, receiving support from your school mentor and University tutors.
