Course summary

Our one-year, full-time Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Secondary Physics programme will equip you with the skills, experience and knowledge you need to teach physics to pupils aged between 11 and 16 – with the option of additional experience of A-level physics teaching. Upon successful completion of your PGCE, you’ll graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 90 Master’s credits.

Mathematics can be a difficult subject for school children. There’s often a belief that you’re either good at it or bad at it, and there is a lack of awareness about the huge range of real-world applications it has.

Within our course you’ll learn and create your own new ways to make mathematics interesting, exciting and relevant. You’ll consider how games, practical activities, interactive teaching, ICT, problem-solving and investigations can support your teaching and stimulate your pupils’ mathematical thinking. You’ll be guided and encouraged to adopt strategies that lead to a rich and rewarding experience for both you and your pupils.

The course also covers wider issues of classroom practice. Behaviour management strategy is a key element within this, and you will be supported in developing your own personal style. You’ll discover that generic behaviour management systems and techniques are absolutely essential, but that how you use them will depend on you and the context in which you’ll be teaching.

Secondary schools are demanding but tremendously rewarding environments to work in. You’ll be teaching pupils as they mature from early adolescence to adulthood. Our programme will teach you how to make an effective contribution to the work of the school beyond your subject. You will succeed on this programme if you want to encourage others to find the same enjoyment and enthusiasm for mathematics that you have.

ABOUT

A great Mathematics teacher can play a pivotal role in a secondary school child’s life. You’ll spend your days stimulating young minds and watching your pupils grow in confidence, so they can achieve their full potential. It’s a challenging career, but also one that’s also incredibly rewarding.

Our PGCE Master’s programme closely interweaves school and university-based training. Over 38 weeks, you’ll spend at least 120 days (minimum 24 weeks) on school placement, and 60 study days in structured learning at UEA.

Our course will provide you with the opportunity to research and evaluate the latest thinking in good teaching practice. It will help you understand how pupils best learn mathematics, so that you can support and guide them – and optimise your teaching. It will also allow you to develop your own strategies to make teaching mathematics an engaging and positive experience.
