Course summary

Do you have a passion for physical education and sport? Why not put it to good use and inspire secondary school pupils to overcome a lack of fitness and improve their physical performance in fun and creative ways?

Couple your zest for sport with our highly-rated PGCE Secondary Education in PE and become a physical education teacher. You will learn the National Curriculum framework and explore a range of aesthetic, artistic, body management and body conditioning activities, as well as a diverse range of team and individual games to develop young people’s sporting techniques.

And, our tutors will support you to plan, resource and deliver engaging lessons to all secondary pupils, regardless of their age or ability.

Plus, our course has QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) built in, so you can apply for a position as a secondary school teacher the minute you graduate.

Course summary

You will develop the skills required to teach across the spectrum of activities in the National Curriculum for PE, acquiring the knowledge, skills, understanding and professional standards necessary to teach pupils within Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and beyond.

We build a strong foundation of experiential learning in the school environment, complemented by a comprehensive support system of mentoring and guidance.

You will experiment with a range of teaching styles and strategies, and while you may bring an expertise to one activity area, you'll learn to teach all six key activities with confidence. You will learn about the physical education curriculum, from the framework provided by the National Curriculum through to the individual lesson plans that teachers use to support learning in their classrooms.

Sessions in university support you in finding out how to use ICT effectively in your lessons, how to mark books and assess work, and how the new Key Stage 3 and 4 curriculum is structured.

Your Career with a PGCE Teaching Qualification

With QTS built into the course, you'll be able to apply for a position as a secondary school PE teacher straight after graduation. You may also consider entering further and higher education establishments to lecture on PE and/or sports related courses. This sometimes requires the acquisition of a qualification at masters level.
