Course summary

Our one-year, full-time Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Secondary Physics programme will equip you with the skills, experience and knowledge you need to teach physics to pupils aged between 11 and 16 – with the option of additional experience of A-level physics teaching. Upon successful completion of your PGCE, you’ll graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 90 Master’s credits.

You’ll spend your time on the course exploring the pedagogy of teaching the full range of national curriculum activity areas for physical education. You’ll get to grips with the range of physical education qualifications available, and you’ll learn to prepare pupils for GCSE and A-level physical education, as well as vocational qualifications such as leadership awards in the physical education curriculum.

As part of our programme you’ll also have the opportunity to take both the British Gymnastics Secondary Teacher's Award and the Rugby Football Union’s 'Rugby Union in Secondary Schools' course. We also offer a range of subject knowledge enhancement opportunities with options to gain national qualifications, including: Lawn Tennis Association Secondary Teacher’s Award, Badminton England Secondary Teacher’s Award, Rounders England Teacher’s Award, British Gymnastics Trampolining Teacher’s Award, England Basketball Teacher’s Award, England Basketball Level 1, Refereeing and Level 1 Table Officiating, England Handball Secondary Teacher’s Award

Stimulating young minds and watching pupils grow in confidence and achieve their full potential – that’s what secondary education is all about. It can be a challenging profession, but also one of the most rewarding.

Our PGCE Master’s programme closely interweaves school and university-based training. Over 38 weeks, you’ll spend 120 days (24 weeks) on school placement, and 60 study days in structured learning at UEA.

Our course will provide you with the opportunity to research and evaluate the latest thinking in good teaching practice, helping you understand the ways pupils learn. It will enable you to develop your own strategies to make teaching physical education a satisfying, engaging, and fun experience.

You’ll graduate ready to teach high quality, fully inclusive physical education. And you’ll be able to give your pupils the skills and confidence to take part in physical activity both in and out of school.
