Course summary

Course overview

Do you want to help children make sense of the world around them and inspire scientists of the future? You can by teaching physics in secondary schools and helping students see how physics plays a crucial role in everyday life.

And, there’s never been a better time to train as talented physics teachers are in high demand.

On our PGCE Secondary Education in Physics course you’ll learn about the National Curriculum framework in science through to individual lesson plans and our expert tutors will support you to plan, resource and deliver lessons to pupils of all secondary ages and abilities.

The course has QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) built in and students will apply for a position as a secondary school teacher during the course of their studies and teaching practice.

Course summary

You will begin by understanding the needs of individual learners, learning to notice, understand and implement key teaching strategies.

Working with individual groups of pupils in school, you will gradually building up to the teaching of whole classes in the second phase. This will involve fostering the appropriate levels of learning in pupils, corresponding to the requirements of the Teachers' Standard.

We use a variety of methods in our teaching, including subject methodology sessions where practical work is completed, small tutorial groups for discussing issues, and mixed-subject research training activities.

We will show you how to run practical lessons effectively, sharing your ideas while maintaining interest and enthusiasm in your students. We are proud of the high level of practical work in our course, not least because we all feel it is an essential part of school science.

We also give you opportunities to carry out research into the aspects of science teaching that capture your imagination. This helps you develop a reflective and analytical view of your work in the classroom, which sustains the high levels of progress we expect.

Your Career with a PGCE Teaching Qualification

With QTS built-in, you'll be able to apply for a position as a high school science teacher immediately after graduation.
