Course summary

Course Overview

The PGCert Practice Education provides a valuable qualification for those who have education and/or training responsibilities in the practice setting. The programme content is focused on learning and teaching in professional environments. The PGCert Practice Education is particularly suited to nurse educators, community practice supervisors and assessors. It may also benefit those in adjacent fields, including social work or allied health care education.

Our PGCert Practice Education is outward facing and engages with contemporary issues in practice education. It draws upon the significant experience of our staff at Buckinghamshire New University in delivering professional education and working alongside healthcare trusts. Our programme will help you to develop essential knowledge and skills to successfully support learning and teaching in contemporary professional contexts. You will also have supported opportunities to tailor learning to your individual environment through assessments and graduate with a recognised postgraduate qualification that allows for further study or professional recognition.

Whilst studying on our programme, you will also have opportunities to showcase and reflect on your practice in the workplace. This ‘real life’ aspect of the programme ensures that your studies support your continued professional development in a way that is relevant to your role and professional aspirations.

Course Details

The modules on this course include an attendance component (4 x full day workshops per module). Most activities and course engagement can be completed flexibly online via Buckinghamshire New University’s virtual learning environment (VLE). Both face-to-face workshops and the VLE will be actively employed as a forum for you to develop working relationships with colleagues whilst considering critical issues relevant to learning, teaching and assessment in professional education.

Collaborative activities feature within the learning and teaching strategy on this course as a means of developing professional relationships and a broader perspective on critical issues. Professional conversations, in the form of supervisory meetings with an appropriately qualified and experienced member of the course team, will also be scheduled throughout the programme. These discussions will provide you with opportunities to tailor the programme to meet your requirements and interests.

The assignments for the PGCert Practice Education are portfolio based and reflective, ensuring that you can draw on meaningful aspects of your practice and situate them in relation to relevant theory. Formative assessments will help you to build confidence and expertise with support.

Career Prospects

A postgraduate certificate is a recognised qualification that will provide you with opportunities for further study and career development. Once you complete the PGCert Practice Education you may go onto an MA Education. You may also use the programme as a framework to support your progression to further leadership roles within your organisation.
