Course summary

Focusing on the applications of molecular pharmacology and drug discovery, our MSci will be particularly attractive to students interested in gaining the advanced research, problem solving, and communication skills required to pursue PhD study or employment in a range of settings including the pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology.

Course overview

Specialising more or less exclusively in Pharmacology and drug discovery, our MSci offers an additional year on top of the Pharmacology BSc in which to undertake your own extended research project, alongside advanced modules.

During your first and second year, you will acquire a strong grounding in the core biological topics that underpin the study of pharmacology. This includes biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, physiology and anatomy and their application to the development and pharmacology of acquired and inherited disease.

Foundation year

Our Foundation Year provides an excellent alternative route to Keele, providing a unique opportunity to better prepare for your chosen degree, and with guaranteed entry onto your undergraduate course once you successfully complete your Foundation Year.

This extra year of study can improve your academic skills, expand your subject knowledge, give you a better understanding of higher education and, perhaps most importantly of all, build your confidence.

Your future career

95% of Keele students are in employment or further study within 15 months of finishing their studies (HESA Graduate Outcomes, 2019/20)

As well as developing core knowledge in the subject, supported with a comprehensive laboratory programme, you will also acquire enhanced communication and problem-solving skills in addition to a range of key transferable and employability skills related to the critical evaluation of scientific literature.

The MSci programme will also develop advanced skills in the practical study of pharmacology including quantitative analysis of ligand-receptor binding and use of in vitro models to study drug action. This will be supported through the development of enhanced skills in the use of computational tools to support rational drug design and their wider application in basic and clinical pharmacology research and drug discovery.
