Course summary

Programme description

The Centre for Doctoral Training in Advanced Metallic Systems was established in January 2009, with a £6.3M investment from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). It is a partnerships between The University of Manchester and The University of Sheffield to provide a national training centre for doctoral scientists and engineers in metallurgy and related disciplines.

This programme offers a new direction for PhD study, with an exciting and interdisciplinary approach to postgraduate research training, combining a foundation year to reinforce core skills with a 3-year doctoral level thesis project.

The Centre aims to prepare the next generation of Metallic Materials Engineers with the right skills set for research leadership in a globally competitive market place.

Aims

The foundation year of the programme aims to develop students' core skills and provide a broad range of industrial experience through MSc level modules, case studies and projects. This will allow students to make an informed choice of PhD topic. After 9 months cores skills training, student will develop a PhD project proposal with academic staff members, which will form the basis of their individual thesis project for Years 2-4.

It is expected that the PhD projects will be interdisciplinary, with co-supervision by academics at Manchester and Sheffield providing students with access to the world class facilities at both institutions.

The Doctoral Training Centre students will also engage in other activities, aimed at expanding their horizons, such as:

Professional, leadership and management skills training
Media and public engagement skills training
Industrial study tours and placements
International Summer Schools
Regular seminar series
Annual Conferences
