Course summary

Programme description

GREEN students undertake a four-year doctoral training programme. The first year of this research programme aims to give students a broad knowledge of the nuclear fuel cycle, through MSc level modules which are taught through week long intensive online modular blocks. Students will also attend industrial site visits and undertake training in transferable skills.

Aims

GREEN offers an exciting interdisciplinary approach to postgraduate research training combining a Masters level foundation year with a three year Doctoral level thesis project. This is supplemented by training in professional skills, project placements in industry or research institutes in the UK & overseas.

Coursework and assessment

The taught element of the programme (Units 1-4) will be examined by a mixture of continual assessment and Viva Voce examinations. The types and amount of continual assessment depend on the module. The viva voce examination will be conducted by a panel to ensure that each student has a comparable experience. Questions will be asked on each unit of the course and the viva will accrue a Pass/Fail mark. Students will be expected to answer 70% of the questions competently in order to gain a pass.

Career opportunities

Over many years, research in all aspects of nuclear fission has been neglected in the UK. However, Government policy now requires rejuvenation of this research, to support cleanup of the historical nuclear legacy, geological disposal of radioactive wastes, a new generation of nuclear power stations, and military nuclear applications. Surveys estimate that, over the next 15 years, the civil nuclear industry alone needs 1000 new graduate/PhD recruits per year.
