Course summary

If you have a research study in mind that would make an original contribution to your chosen field but do not have a Master’s degree that included a significant research element, our Integrated PhD may be the right choice for you. The Integrated PhD can be studied as a full time course (4 years) part-time (9 years). It offers a foundation in research skills and opportunities to develop your proposal during the early stages of the programme and will lead to the award of PhD.

This is an intensive programme that integrates a substantial programme of seminars, workshops and lectures during the first 12-18 months (full time) or 24-30 months (part time) designed to develop foundational research skills, subject-specific knowledge of Education as a discipline alongside the development of a wide range of transferable skills. As part of this initial phase you will further develop and strengthen your initial research proposal, and also write and present a research report related to a key aspect of your proposed research project. Successful completion of this initial phase of the Integrated PhD will enable you to complete a research project leading to the production of a PhD thesis. You will receive support from a supervisory team with specialist expertise in your area. You will be expected to successfully complete a range of research and Education modules before progressing onto the thesis stage of your PhD. You will be expected to be in the university during this phase to attend taught sessions. This is generally a half a day a week.

The integrated PhD is ideally suited to students who need to strengthen their foundational research skills and their research proposal before embarking on the research project that leads to the PhD thesis and the generation of original knowledge. The final award is the same as that which can be achieved by direct entry to the PhD.

A major attraction of the Integrated PhD is that much of the work that you undertake for assessment during the initial skills development phase of the course can be turned into material for drafting parts of your PhD thesis.
