Course summary

Cambridge is an unparalleled place to undertake a PhD in medieval literature and culture. The medieval manuscript and book holdings of the University and Colleges are outstanding, and the Faculty includes a lively community of scholars of the material text and digital culture. Former medievalists include the scholars W.W. Skeat and C.S. Lewis; current medievalists in the Faculty, many of whom are recent appointments, have a diverse research expertise. This enables us to nurture research in many different areas, using a variety of critical, theoretical and interdisciplinary practices. We have a keen and energetic community of postgraduate students and everyone works hard to foster dialogue and a sense of intellectual community. All undergraduates study at least one medieval paper, which ensures teaching opportunities are available to PhD students. Training in teaching and in many other aspects of professional life is offered to all. Our postgraduate students run an independent reading group and they have an excellent track record in becoming leading scholars in the field. Faculty members welcome applications to study many topics within the field; we are happy to be approached to discuss potential applicants’ plans, and to tell you more about what Cambridge has to offer.
