Philosophy BA (Hons)

Our degree is broad and flexible. You can select to study key central areas of philosophy such as metaphysics, knowledge, ethics, religion, mind, logic, language or political philosophy. You can also choose options which are highly relevant in today’s world but which are not commonly offered elsewhere. These include philosophy of education, philosophy of law, philosophy of medicine, global justice, climate change, film and philosophy, classical Chinese philosophy, and feminism. You can also study an unusual range of figures in the history of philosophy, from ‘analytic’ to ‘continental’ and from the Greeks to the twentieth century, including Plato, Descartes, Hegel and Sartre.At Sheffield, we work in engaged philosophy. We believe that philosophy sheds light on complex aspects of our existence and, at its best, can help people to make sense of the world and their lives in empowering ways. All our teaching is underpinned with excellent research – the department was ranked second in the UK for the quality of our publications (REF 2014).The department is known for its friendly, supportive and collegial atmosphere and offers a wide range of academic and social activities, including a dynamic Philosophy Society, and a popular reading weekend. Our students also work in the community on our award-winning Philosophy in the City project, which introduces schoolchildren to philosophical ideas they can apply to everyday life.Our graduates have robust analytical skills, excellent presentation and research skills, the ability to work independently and in teams and, crucially, can develop convincing arguments to influence complex decision-making. These skills are highly valued by employers and transfer well into many types of working environments including teaching, law, social work, journalism, the civil service, charities and business.
