Course summary

This industry-accredited BA Photography (Professional and Applied) degree is very different from other photography degrees. It specialises in developing the creative, technical and business expertise you need to succeed in the exciting and fast-paced image industry. WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?Although there are hundreds of photography degrees, there are few like this that focus on the commercial aspect of the art form. This has been recognised by industry bodies, the British Institute of Professional Photography and the Association of Photographers, who have endorsed it. BA Photography (Professional and Applied) also includes an optional year in industry to really boost your employability. IS THIS COURSE FOR YOU?BA Photography (Professional and Applied) will suit you if you want to learn how to produce creative photography for a wide range of industries, from advertising to journalism. HOW YOU WILL LEARNWe focus on creative problem-solving through project work. You’ll work on real commercial briefs from the outset, dealing directly with clients to produce and present your work. There’s also an inspirational mix of studio workshops, group and individual tutorials, seminars and lectures, insights from visiting photographers and trade suppliers, as well as visits to exhibitions and employers. OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPERIENCES. The optional year in industry is a brilliant opportunity to build your experience. You could work for local papers and media agencies or in-house for larger organisations. You and your work will be highly visible because we take part in national competitions and festivals, including the acclaimed FORMAT International Photography Festival hosted by Derby’s arts centre, QUAD. CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITYThe skills you'll develop on this commercial photography degree are invaluable in areas ranging from commercial and editorial photography to location finding and management, photo retail and image manipulation. Our graduates forge careers in fashion, advertising, documentary and landscape photography.
