Course summary

Our Physics with a Year Abroad BSc course gives you the opportunity to study a physics degree in the heart of London, with a year at a university in Europe, Asia or the USA. The host institution will make the final decision on your application to study there and it will depend on your performance in you end of year exams. The year abroad will allow you to experience different approaches to physics and demonstrate your capacity to study and work in an overseas environment. You may also choose to include language modules in your degree to develop your skills.

Key benefits

  • Award winning: six former staff and students in the department won Nobel Prizes.
  • Research lies at the heart of our department, so you’ll be taught by internationally renowned scientists.
  • You’ll have access to our newly refurbished laboratory facilities, located in the heart of London.
  • Study the skies using King’s own rooftop observatory and telescope.

Our course will give you an understanding across all the fundamental aspects of physics. You will study areas such as relativity, quantum mechanics, fields and waves, electromagnetism, nuclear and particle physics and carry out extensive project work in your fourth year. You will study our standard Physics BSc degree course, but in your third year, you will study at a university in Europe, Asia or the USA before returning for a final year with us. This course is ideal if you want to experience a different approach to the subject, demonstrate your capacity to study and work in an overseas environment and develop your language skills. Problem solving and project work is an important part of this course and you’ll learn about team work, group organisation and the skills of oral and poster presentations. We also encourage you to work with a school, to experience teaching and develop the skill of presenting information to non-experts. You’ll be assigned a personal tutor to support your development and our department encourages an atmosphere in which students feel able to easily approach academic staff. Our Student-Staff Liaison Committee provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and feedback on teaching. Staff and students are members of the Maxwell Society, which is the Department of Physics’ social and lecture society.

Our Physics graduates are in high demand because employers recognise the wide range of skills that they possess. We train physicists to be good problem solvers, to think logically and to apply mathematical and computational techniques to real problems.
