Course summary
Partnered with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and home to innovative facilities and internationally-leading research, the University of Surrey offers distinctive physics courses that are among the very best in the UK and reflect the diversity and excitement of the subject.Unique in the UK, our exciting BSc Physics with Nuclear Astrophysics **(with Foundation Year)** course contain all the core modules required in a physics degree, but with a specialism that combines the quantum world of atomic nuclei with the cosmic scale of astronomy. After all, when you look up into the night sky, almost everything you see is the result of a nuclear reaction. In the National Student Survey (NSS) 2018 our physics courses were ranked top 10 in the UK for overall satisfaction. The special blend of physics taught in our BSc Physics with Nuclear Astrophysics course reflects the outstanding nuclear physics research we conduct at Surrey. You will gain a thorough understanding of all the core elements of traditional physics – for example particle physics, atoms and molecules, and quantum mechanics – and study topics such as detection and measurement in astronomy and experimental nuclear physics. You can also switch between any of our specialist physics degrees before your second year. You may choose to take an integrated research year or Professional Training placement, giving you the opportunity to gain invaluable work and research experience and a real head start whether you enter the job market or continue to postgraduate studies. This course is accredited by the UK Institute of Physics. We’re always looking to make it easier to access the education we offer, so we have launched the option of taking a degree with a foundation year.A foundation year is an extra year of study at the start of your course that leads in to a full degree programme. It’s a great option if:• You don’t have the grades for a full degree course• You have non-traditional qualifications or experience• You’re starting university after some time away from education• You’re looking for more support during the transition into university study.During a foundation year you’ll learn about your chosen subject, develop your study skills and get used to university life. On successful completion of your foundation year, you’ll be ready to progress to the first year of your degree course. As a foundation year student, you’ll be a full student of the University and part of our community. You’ll have access to all our campus facilities and support.
