Course summary
Discover photonics – the science of light – and apply your physics knowledge to the next generation of technologies. From the optical fibres that underpin today’s global internet to new medical treatments, photonics has transformed our lives. With the application of optical techniques set to increase and a shortage of qualified people to employ, photonics is a great field to study. You’ll be taught by staff at the top of their field – some of whom are based in our Optoelectronics Research Centre, one of the world’s leading institutes for photonics research. You’ll also benefit from extensive, state-of-the-art laser laboratories, and learn how to use industry-standard equipment to make optical measurements. The University of Southampton is a great place to study physics; we're ranked fourth in the Russell Group for course satisfaction by the Guardian University Guide 2020. And we’ve placed in the top three in the Russell Group for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) for the last four years*. We also have a long heritage of discovery and a concentration of expertise in photonics. This course is accredited by the Institute of Physics. *Not all Russell Group universities are returned in the NSS every year
