Course summary
Apply the full breadth of physics to a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including physics at its most extreme and the evolution of the Universe. This course will provide you with a solid grounding in physics, along with in-depth specialist knowledge of astrophysics. You’ll explore a range of astrophysical phenomena, including star formation, black hole growth and the expansion of the Universe. You’ll learn how to combine evidence from stellar and extragalactic astronomy to build consistent theoretical models of the evolution of galaxies. There will also be opportunities for you to carry out both observational and computational astrophysics projects.Topics covered include exoplanets, galaxies, cosmology, stars and stellar evolution, general relativity and high energy astrophysics. The Master of Physics (MPhys) degree gives you the opportunity to enhance and deepen your knowledge compared to BSc courses, particularly in topics at the forefront of research. You’ll study master's level units and carry out a major master's level research project, giving you ideal preparation for postgraduate study or a career in research.Put your learning into practiceOur courses are inspired by our research. Our academics who teach you carry out research in many different areas of theoretical and experimental physics. They bring the latest developments in physics into their teaching, and you can get involved by working with them on your own research project.Use specialist facilitiesYou’ll learn experimental and computing skills in our well-equipped teaching labs. You can carry out projects with research equipment and high-performance computers in our specialist research labs. We also have strong links to research facilities and observatories in the UK and around the world.
