Course summary
Physics at Aberdeen encompasses the study of the universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles. If you have an inquiring mind, enjoy a bit of innovative thought, and are interested in understanding what’s going on around you in nature, in science and in technology, then studying a physics degree at Aberdeen will suit you.The Department of Physics is a great environment for learning, with small class sizes and close relations between staff and students. We use modern teaching methods, with an emphasis on practical, "hands-on" knowledge. Our Institute of Physics-accredited programme takes you on a fascinating journey of understanding through the physical world, from quarks, atoms and molecules to planets, galaxies and the universe. We will ask questions as vast as how the universe has evolved into its present state and explore topics such as motion, forces, and energy of everyday experiences. Our overall aim is to teach you how to think differently about the world, based on a solid foundation of existing knowledge. Here at Aberdeen, you will be taught by experts in both experimental and theoretical areas of physics, whose research ranges from understanding the fundamental nature of the universe to solid-state physics (understanding the atomic structure of complex materials and semiconductor device physics). Our experts work at the interface between physics and other disciplines and so here you will see first-hand how we apply our physics skills and knowledge to understand problems in the environment, the economy and in medicine (for example in epidemiology - the spread of infectious diseases). Many of our students go on to become professional scientists in industry, research institutes and universities while others use their quantitative and data analysis skills in a variety of different ways in industry and commerce. So, if you have an inquiring mind, enjoy a bit of innovative thought, and are interested in understanding what’s going on around you in nature, in science and in technology, then studying a physics degree at Aberdeen will suit you.
