Course summary
The Professional Policing ‘pre-join’ degree entry route into policing constitutes a core element of the PEQF and is a professional academic knowledge-based degree based upon the national curriculum for the police constable role.
The Professional Policing Degree route into policing enables entrants to gain the academic theory and knowledge of professional policing. The programme is three years in duration and will result in the successful completion of a BSc (Hons) Professional Policing Degree. A successful recruit to the police service via this entry route is subject to a two-year probationary period as specified in Police Regulations. The degree has a currency of 5 years following graduation for recruitment into policing.
However this degree does not guarantee entry to the police, potential applicants would still have to satisfy police recruitment criteria and go through the same application process.
Course Overview
The BSc in Professional Policing Practice will cover areas that are critical to effective policing in the 21st century, such as evidence-based policing; decision making and discretion; criminology and crime prevention; there is also coverage of key areas of modern policing responsibility, such as digital policing and dealing with cyber-crime and crime prevention.
Engagement with the local forces has identified areas requiring instruction and professional development that are not included in the CoP specified learning outcomes e.g. ‘County Lines’ and ‘Adverse Childhood Experiences’. The course also includes transferable modules needed to enable students to have a degree that would lead them into careers in the wider public and private sector, these include Strategic Management, Management of Resources, Organisational Leadership, these, and others, have been incorporated into the programme.
Career Opportunities
The course team has developed very close links with a number of professional organisations in both the public sector and legal services fields. This has allowed for close consultation on the development of course content and the availability of unique work experience opportunities.
For those students who wish to pursue a career in the Police force then the course works closely with South Wales Police, Gwent and Dyfed Powys Police and has developed a volunteer work programme for the students to gain valuable experience and insight into the profession. This will put the students in a more advantageous position to gain employment in their chosen profession.
The course works closely with other Public sector organisations, the combination of both legal and public sector understanding and knowledge would be seen as a benefit to the wider Criminal Justice professions.
The team has developed close relationships with local firms and organisations and developing work experience opportunities which would benefit the students if they chose to extend into further criminal justice study.
