Course summary

At Southampton you can develop your language skills and deepen your understanding of Spanish speaking societies and cultures. The Latin American Studies Programme enriches formal instruction with experiential learning abroad. Our Latin American Studies programme enriches formal instruction with experiential learning abroad. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of Latin America and a rich knowledge of the global processes affecting the region and its people. You will develop your practical language skills in Spanish and chose option modules from politics, history, cultural studies and Spanish sociolinguistics among others. Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is consistently ranked in the top five in the UK by The Guardian University Guide and we are ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research. You will be able to learn another language such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese or Russian from scratch, and reach graduate level in French, Italian, German and Portuguese.
