Course summary

Focus on real-life political decision-making and policies, and discover how politics shapes all of our lives, by studying our BA(Hons) Politics degree in Cambridge. On this course you’ll study the practical and theoretical aspects of modern politics, and gain insight into our past, present andfuture on both a local and global scale. You’ll examine relevant political debates from a historical, philosophical and sociologicalperspective. In doing so, we ‘ll go beyond the ‘high politics’ of traditional theories and the workings of parliaments. Instead, you’llbe able to develop your own specialisms in areas such as global diplomacy and international issues like climate change; protestmovements like Black Lives Matter; the devolution of power away from central government; the politics of the new media; thepolitics of gender, and the place of race in modern society. Our specialist modules such as Race, Racism and Cultural Identity,Wrestling with Trump: – the WWE and Modern Political Culture, Politics and Social Media will allow you to engage withcontemporary issues, developing a deeper understanding of modern politics. Your understanding of political issues, policy and change will prepare you for a wide range of careers. You may want to take ouroptional placement year and secure a role in local government, an NGO, charity or in the justice system to discover where you’dlike your degree to take you. As a BA (Hons) Politics student at ARU, you’ll learn from expert tutors including historians, sociologists, criminologists andpolitical scientists. Together, we’ll explore the latest theories, debates and research; examine domestic, European and international themes inpolitics, and consider the practical implications of political decision-making and policies. All our Politics students have the opportunity to study in the USA or Canada for a semester, and can apply for funding to helpcover the cost. Our courses are delivered through teaching and learning methods which provide students with the widest possible exposure to amodern and innovative higher education experience. These methods vary and could include attendance at lectures and seminars, undertaking laboratory exercises or work-basedactivities, practical work, performances, presentations, field trips, other relevant visits and e-learning through Canvas, our onlinelearning management system. Each course is divided into a number of ‘modules’ which focus on particular areas, each of which has a specific approach to itsdelivery. This information is published to students for each module they take via the Module Definition Form (MDF) and Canvas.
