Popular Music Performance is a practical, future-focused course for musicians who want to develop their live performance skills and become confident, adaptable performers. You’ll receive dedicated one-to-one tuition, ensemble coaching and specialist mentoring while exploring the full breadth of popular music practice - from songwriting and arranging to studio recording, composition and artist development. Creativity, collaboration and performance sit at the heart of the course, helping you grow as a versatile and expressive musician. You’ll learn through hands-on workshops, masterclasses and project-based activities, supported by a teaching team with wide professional experience across performance, technology, songwriting and the wider music industry. Working closely with engineers, songwriters, session performers and theatre practitioners, you’ll gain real-world experience that mirrors contemporary industry practice and builds your confidence on stage and in the studio. Outstanding facilities support every aspect of your development, including professional-standard concert halls, rehearsal spaces, practice rooms, ensemble studios, world-class recording facilities and an extensive instrument collection. With generous open access outside teaching hours, you’ll have the freedom to rehearse, refine your craft and collaborate whenever inspiration strikes. As part of Huddersfield’s vibrant creative community, you’ll also have opportunities to join ensembles, perform at university events, and experience world-leading festivals such as the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and Electric Spring.
