Course summary

MPhil, a combination of coursework and research. You will take two semesters of full-time taught courses or equivalent part-time study and assessments. This is followed by a thesis of no more than 40,000 words which you will prepare during the summer and the following year and submit by the end of the second academic session.

All students are supervised and taught by renowned experts in their fields so they become part of a supportive and distinguished scholarly community.

Each Modern Languages postgraduate is provided with study space and computing facilities.

The fields of research interest in the School of Modern Languages range from the medieval period to the 21st century and engage with cultures spanning the globe.

The research specialisms for the seven languages (Arabic, French, German, Italian Persian, Russian, Spanish) and Comparative Literature are:

  • contemporary and comparative literature
  • cultural identity studies
  • cultural memory
  • affect theory
  • migration studies
  • Russian, Soviet and Eastern European studies
  • cross-cultural 19th century studies
  • early modern studies
  • medieval studies
  • poetry and poetic practices
  • medical humanities
