Course summary
Overview
Learn about the professional writing opportunities you can have in the publishing, communication and media industries and how to turn your skills into a career with a Creative Writing master’s.
The MA in Professional Creative Writing studied either full-time or part-time enables you to develop your writing craft and hone your writing skills towards the real-world needs of the publishing, communication and media industries. The course covers traditional, contemporary and emerging forms of writing - from novel writing to the graphic novel and creative nonfiction; from playwriting to writing for television, screen and multimedia; from poetry to psychogeography and eco-writing; from crime writing to fantasy and horror.
Course information
The MA Professional Creative Writing has been so named as to emphasise the professional aspects of creative writing: it is designed to enhance employability and focus is directed towards the development of students into professional writers.
Career prospects
You will have input from professional writers teaching on the course, who include the novelist Amanda Smyth, the playwright Alan Pollock and the YA fiction writer Lauren James, along with specialists in the publishing and media industries and the opportunity to meet and network with working writers and writing organisations. We have guest lectures and network events with Writing West Midlands.
You will be able to write across a range of contemporary and emerging forms and genres, and you will leave with a portfolio of assessed work in industry-ready format.
Placements are not normally available on the 1 year MA; however, the Employment Placement Tutor would be able to assist you to apply for related part-time and volunteering work.
