Course summary

The Level 6 Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (Post-16 Education and Training) (Specific Educational Needs (SEN)) (Part Time) course is designed for teachers of students with Specific Educational Needs (SEN) in the post-16 sector. An honours degree (2:2) is required for entry to the programme.

The programme provides content knowledge and professional practice skills relating to subject specific pedagogy in SEN practice. It aims to build a shared understanding of effective teaching and learning within specialist SEN practice across a range of complex and changing contexts in the Education and Training Sector.

There will be opportunities to interrogate a range of national and international perspectives on SEN learning and pedagogical models to inform and improve practice. Trainees will research and recommend practices that they can enact in their own classrooms.

Through innovative teaching and learning strategies such as collaborative teaching and in-the-moment coaching, this in-service, part-time course aims to model practices that trainees can enact in classrooms across different curricula and changing contexts in the sector.

A range of assessment strategies will be used. These may include the following:

  • Teaching Practitioner File
  • Teaching observation
  • Reflective writing
  • E-presentation
  • Evaluative Report
  • Academic poster
  • Research study
