Course summary
This programme is designed for UK registered Nurses, Doctors and Dentists based in the UK, in order to apply you must provide evidence of UK registration. You must also hold the correct entry clearance to allow you to study part time in the United Kingdom.
In order to apply for a postgraduate student loan, it is important to apply and enrol on the full MSc and complete this qualification in continuous progression.
This innovative part time programme is available to existing and aspiring cosmetic practitioners who already hold professional registration as nurses, doctors or dentists. Developed in partnership with expert practitioners and the leading professional associations in aesthetics, the competency based programme has been designed to fully meet the Standards for Education and Training providers identified by Joint Council of Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) (2018b).
A flexible blended learning approach is used to deliver the programme allowing you to fit it around your work and make it accessible to those geographically distant to the University. The programme is a mixture of e-learning, face to face and practice based learning. The practice based learning will assessed by expert aesthetic practitioners holding a recognised assessor qualification.
The programme as a full Masters is taken over three years (it is also available as a linked award). The first stage (Year 1) focuses on the assessment of your proficiency to provide safe person-centred care to meet the JCCP Competency Framework for Aesthetic Practitioners (2018a), enabling you to practice autonomously as an aesthetic practitioner offering botulinum toxin and non-permanent dermal fillers. This will be achieved through the opportunity to develop the relevant evidence based knowledge to underpin your practice and to develop practice competence working alongside experienced, professionally registered aesthetic practitioners who will observe and assess your competence in practice
The second year of the programme develops your expertise to advance aesthetic practice through; facilitating the learning of others, developing your business and understanding the existing evidence base underpinning aesthetic practice.
Course Structure
The Northumbria University Aesthetics programme is a full Masters award taken over three years (stages). They must be accessed incrementally and you must successfully complete each stage in turn. Should you be unable to progress, lower awards are awarded for successfully completed stages, but interim awards are not given.
In the first year, the programme will: prepare registered practitioners to develop the clinical knowledge and competencies required to provide facial cosmetic treatments with botulinum toxin and non- permanent dermal fillers underpinned by sound professional decision making at post graduate level.
In the second year, the programme will: build upon the clinical competence and knowledge acquired and enable registered practitioners to understand and critique the evidence base for aesthetic practice, set up and run independent aesthetic practices, which provide safe, person centred care, and enable them to facilitate practice based learning and assessment of other practitioners.
The final year will: enable registered practitioners to add to the evidence base for non-surgical aesthetic procedures through empirical research or systematic review of the literature.
Your Career
The programme will prepare existing and aspiring aesthetic practitioners who already hold professional registration to meet the essential educational recommendations for practice identified in the Competency Framework for Aesthetic Practitioners (JCCP, 2018a) and the Standards for Education and Training providers (JCCP, 2018b).
