Course summary
Course Details
This course explores project management as a generic professional discipline. Project management is an important facet of organisations across all sectors and industries. This course will provide you with the skills to be able to manage the people, time and financial resources that are required to deliver successful projects.
You will enhance your knowledge of the principles, roles and techniques of project management, and you will learn how to use project management software. You will also develop a range of transferable business skills, including the ability to work effectively with others, knowledge of how to use contemporary digital technologies and the ability to communicate with stakeholders at all levels.
Accredited by the Association for Project Management (APM), your course will teach you how to work effectively with others and cultivate the range of technical skills required to be able to deliver projects effectively.
This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total. During your placement you will be employed by an organisation, giving you the opportunity to work on a variety of projects. This practical experience is a vital part of the course and will enable you to apply your theoretical knowledge in the workplace. It also provides the ideal basis for the final year of your degree when you will be focusing on the professional applications of project management. Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.
Course Benefits
In addition to the formal lectures, tutorials and IT laboratory sessions, hands-on project scenario classes are delivered to help reinforce the learning process. Feedback and progress assessment, extra-curricular seminars, field trips and the involvement of industry experts as guest speakers will enrich your learning experience and your knowledge of current issues in the project management context.
On the sandwich route, you will gain real-life experience of working within the profession through a work placement. Your practical knowledge and understanding of project management will also be enhanced through our links with organisations who will encourage you to apply for work placements, visit their organisations, and assist on real life projects.
Job Prospects
The broad nature of this course will allow you to apply the principles and practices you have learned to any area of business and organisational life. You are encouraged to take up the option of a placement year, where you will be able to put theory into practice and become a work-ready graduate, highly sought after by employers. Graduates have secured positions in a wide range of sectors, including financial services, the NHS, construction, technology, consultancy, retail and the voluntary sector.
