Psychology

Psychology is the study of people, with a particular focus on individuals. Knowledge and skills cultivated within the discipline enable practitioners to intervene at personal, inter personal and systemic levels in order to enable people to live better lives. Choice of programmes allows students to study a course that reflects their prior interests, lived experience, or future goals. Ethical practice and working within a shared set of values is also important to us; our University is deeply committed to serving the common good. We see Psychology as a discipline with the capacity, and responsibility, to make a positive contribution to how people live in everyday life.In our teaching of Psychology, we strive to enable our students to grow into constructive citizens who are curious about people, and motivated to make a positive difference to the lives of others. Beyond classroom learning, there are opportunities to enrich your chosen programme of study in a way that will help you in developing your psychological thinking. They include going on a placement, working as a research assistant in a laboratory, travelling to another country as part of Global Hope, or under the Erasmus study abroad scheme.

Theology

Across 2,000 years, the Christian tradition has provoked an immense wealth of theological ideas, has adapted itself to many cultural forms and has shaped human minds and events. This degree offers you the

opportunity to study Christianity from a number of perspectives

– historical, doctrinal, pastoral and contextual – so that you will acquire expertise in finding your way through this complex and rich field of study. The degree includes the academic study of the Christian Bible and

embodies our commitment to take faith seriously

whilst at the same time to be intellectually stretching, stimulating and challenging. The teaching staff in the Department represent a broad range of Christian traditions, who are all published experts in their own particular fields of expertise. Our

library collections in theology and religion are superb

, amounting to well over 100,000 volumes in total, and we are investing significantly in enhancing this even further, particularly with electronic resources.By exploring the textual, historical, political and philosophical aspects of theology, our provision in this area, a full one-half of a joint honours degree, provides you with a holistic and in-depth appreciation of the subject.
