Counselling psychologists help people dealing with issues like bereavement, domestic violence, sexual abuse, traumas and relationship issues.

Prepare for professional training in counselling and clinical psychology with this British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited course, developing the skills needed to enter postgraduate training for a range of rewarding careers including psychotherapy and coaching.

  • Learn effective skills from role play to peer coaching practice up to pre-practitioner level putting you in a good position to begin your professional training for exciting new careers in counselling psychotherapy
  • Study classic and contemporary theories of counselling and psychotherapy, including psychodynamic, person-centred and cognitive behavioural therapy

  • Gain insights into psychological practice in the NHS and career paths available

Graduates from this course who achieve a Graduate Basis for Chartership with the BPS are eligible to apply to study a range of post-graduate taught and research degrees such as the MSc Coaching Psychology, MSc Health Psychology, PGDip Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or a research degree (MRes).

Typically,students opt for an accredited MSc programme, such as the one offered in the Psychology Department. An alternative route is to undertake a taught doctorate programme (in the area of clinical or counselling psychology). Alternatively, you would be qualified to apply to study any area of psychology at post-graduate level that leads to chartership (e.g. Educational, Sport, Health etc.)
