Course summary

Data science is a rapidly growing field of employment opportunity where government agencies, universities, international health agencies, consulting/research firms and other scientific organisations are typical employers. One key focus of public health data science is the analysis of routine administrative health data to improve monitoring of population health and prevent ill health. It covers aspects of information governance and disclosure control and introduces advanced methods of data management and analysis, which help in exploring disease pathways and factors important in patient care, and in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of health research.

WHY THIS PROGRAMME

  • The programme is taught by academics and practitioners from a wide variety of organisations and disciplines including Health Protection Scotland, environmental health, environmental protection, public health medicine, health economics and business/management.
  • Public health has a central role in guiding health care practice, influencing health policy, protecting the public, and improving population health. If you work or intend to work in an organisation which has public health responsibilities or aims to improve population health then this Master of Public Health degree will be suited to you.
  • Public Health at the University was among the earliest academic fields to move towards a multidisciplinary range of programmes involving staff from a number of areas. Current disciplines represented include health promotion, health protection, sociology, psychology, epidemiology, statistics, and health economics.
  • Public health practitioners are employed in health services, academia, national and local government, the voluntary sector, as well as in international humanitarian relief. The MPH degree is recognised in most countries as an essential qualification for a career in public health.
  • The analysis of routinely collected data forms a methodological focus in the department’s research and publication output. Research methods include cross disciplinary data linkage, applied econometrics for routine health data, and evaluation of public health interventions and tobacco control.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Academic careers relating to each specialism may be pursued, including: research assistant, research associate, and lecturer. Similar research positions may be found with NGOs and, to a lesser extent, the private sector. Data science specialism graduates will be suited to positions in epidemiology and information science with NGOs and health service public health departments. Pharmaceutical industry health informatics positions and early career positions in bioinformatics may also suit.
