Course summary

Our Public Services programme is for those interested in the helping professions, for those who are keen to add value to their communities, their towns, cities, and countries. The pandemic has shown how dependent we all are on the people we live with and around. This programme is for those who have the aptitude for meeting such challenges with energy and enthusiasm.

Course Overview

All subjects studied on the programme are relevant to the world of work within the public and voluntary sectors. The skills developed to achieve academic success are also those required by employers and for study at higher levels.

The involvement of employers, visiting speakers and other organisations in the delivery of the programme gives opportunities to students to interact with external networks and see the relevance of their studies.

Our focus is always on balancing theory and practice: it may be important to understand how things ought to be according to a textbook, but quite another to wrestle with the real-world challenges.

Our teaching team has many decades of professional experience across the public services spectrum including local and national government, the voluntary sector, community engagement, policing, law, the armed forces, and politics.

Career Opportunities

Graduates exit with significant subject knowledge and up to date skills designed for the modern workplace. Possible careers are very diverse, including the prison service, justice system; past students have gained employment as PCSOs, police officers, fire officers, management training within public and 3rd sector organisations, or further study including nursing, paramedics, legal system and master’s qualifications.

The programme’s interaction with employers, the possibility of integration of work-based learning and internships further accentuate the employability of graduates and the currency of the programme content.
